  • Moo-Yeal Lee, PhDAssistant Professor, Department of Chemical & Biomedical EngineeringCleveland State University

Recent advances in "three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting" offers new opportunities for creating highly organized multicellular tissues by precisely placing multiple human cell types in biomimetic hydrogels ("bioinks") in a layer-by-layer fashion with printing robots. Dr. Moo-Yeal Lee (http://academic.csuohio.edu/bioprinting/), an assistant professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland State University (CSU) and a chief technology officer at 3D MicroArray, Inc., is an expert in miniaturized 3D bioprinting technology. Dr. Lee has utilized 3D bioprinting technology to create neural stem cell spheroids and human liver tissues via layer-by-layer cell printing. His work facilitates personalized cancer therapy by creating tumors in the laboratory using a patient's own cancer cells.

Dr. Lee received his Ph.D. from KAIST, South Korea, and worked at Tokyo Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Solidus Biosciences, Inc. before joining CSU in 2013. Dr. Lee was awarded a $1.3 million four-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for stem cell research to improve testing for toxic compounds that are harmful to the development of the human brain. He is selected as one of ten semi-finalists in Transform Tox Testing Challenge supported by US EPA and NIH. In addition, he recently received a faculty merit recognition award for his contributions to engaged learning at CSU. He has published 52 papers in peer-reviewed journals, including the prestigious Nature Communications, 17 patents and patent applications, 2 book chapters, and 1 textbook.
