By April 1st, 2018, automakers and government regulators need to reach agreement on a plan that calls for car companies to achieve an average fuel economy of 54.5 mpg across their fleets by 2025. The two sides, however, are still far apart. Automakers say it will profoundly change the affordability of vehicles; regulators say it’s an absolute necessity. Can they find middle ground? And will that middle ground satisfy both sides? In Cleveland, Brett Smith of the Center for Automotive Research will discuss the proposed mandate, the upcoming mid-term evaluation, and the effect it could have on the auto industry and consumers.
